Open Day in Jianchu: Beginnings and Real-World Constraints

Open day is the Jianchu officer 开. Traditional notes favor it for openings, travel, and beginnings that need a door. A beginning still waits on the constraint that makes it real: an inspection, a key, a permit, a person who must be present. Two points do not open a door the building has kept shut. Open is not Initiate (执). Initiate, sometimes called Hold, scores zero. The English word “open” is reserved here for 开.
A favored officer can still list your act as unsuitable. The list wins the arithmetic. Open is not a master key.
On 13 October 2026 the day pillar is 庚申, the officer is Open, the spirit is Golden Coffer (金匮), and the path is yellow. Travel and opening a market are suitable. That combination is why a locked travel window in this engine ranks the date first, at score 8 with no birth date: four plus two plus two.

A door still needs a hinge

Classical Open is a door day. The metaphor is precise enough to be dangerous. Doors open because someone has the key, the hinge works, and the hour is one the building allows. A date class cannot substitute for any of the three. Readers who love 开 sometimes invite the public before the hinge is on. The invitation is the part that feels like metaphysics. The inspection at 13:30

A shop in Portland can unlock for customers only after a fire inspection booked for Wednesday at 13:30. Wednesday is also an Open day, yellow path, and the owner wants the press at 09:00 so the photographs have “the officer and the morning.” At 09:00 the inspection has not happened. A photograph of a locked, uninspected door is not an opening. She keeps the press for 15:00, after the inspector has either cleared the door or given a list. If the list is long, the press goes home and the customers wait until the list is done. Open added two points to a date she did not need to rank, because the inspection was the only Wednesday the fire bureau had. Two points did not move the bureau. They must not move her into a false start. If she later chooses a grand reopening among three free Saturdays, all of them legal to occupy, that is a window for Pick a Good Day. The bureau’s 13:30 is a constraint.

Travel that is actually optional

The same officer is a better friend to optional travel. A reader who can fly on the 13th or the 18th for a holiday, both fares tolerable, both days off work, can let a travel rank prefer the Open, yellow, suitable day. That is the tool’s job. If the 13th is a storm the airline is already waiving, he takes the waiver. Weather is a constraint the almanac did not compute. If a birth date he enters clashes the 13th, the score may drop and the 18th may rise. He is allowed to tell the score “the 13th is the day my sibling can meet me” and book it anyway. Guidance that can be declined is still guidance. Guidance that cannot be declined has become a rule this product does not claim.

The position of 开 in the cycle, after Receive and before Close, is not a story that you must receive something before you may begin, or that a beginning must slam shut. Cycle order is arithmetic on branches, told in the calculation page. Life order is the inspection, the key, the person.

Beginnings that are not openings

A difficult conversation, a resignation, a medical result, a funeral: people sometimes hunt an Open day so the hard thing will “go well.” The officer is a poor instrument for harm reduction. Say the hard thing when the people and the facts are ready, or when delay would be its own harm. Do not wait through a Close day for an Open day if a landlord, a patient, or a dependent needs you sooner. Funerary and memorial timing has its own occasion in the tool, with its own activity lines, and even then the family’s real constraints lead. Open is not a charm for grief.

We do not describe a baby born on 开 as an “open” soul, and we do not cast charts for children. An adult opening a shop, a trip, or a meeting can use two points as a tie-break among legal, ready days.
