How Jianchu Days Are Calculated at a High Level

Jianchu days are calculated, at the level this tool uses, by comparing two earthly branches: the branch of the civil day, and the branch of the solar-term month that contains that date. When the two branches match, the officer is Establish (建), the day some English notes call Jian. The other eleven officers then sit at fixed steps around that match. The result is a label on the date. It is professional almanac guidance, not a hand-built fate and not a second calendar you must recompute in the margin.

Key facts

  • The twelve officers, in cycle order, are Establish, Remove, Full, Balance, Stable, Initiate, Destruction, Danger, Success, Receive, Open, and Close. Initiate is 执, which some English notes call Hold. Destruction is 破, which some notes call Break.
  • The month branch comes from the solar term (节) that starts the month, compared by civil date in this engine, not by your city’s longitude and not by the lunar new moon.
  • The day branch is the earthly branch of that civil date’s day pillar. The officer is the step from the month branch to the day branch.
  • Because both cycles are twelve long, each branch wears one officer for the whole solar-term month. The officer of a branch changes when the month branch changes.
  • On our score, Success or Open adds two, Full adds one, Close or Destruction subtracts two. The other officers, including Establish, are named and add zero.
  • The officer is one layer. Suitable lines, path, and an optional birth clash can outweigh it. The same civil date returns the same officer worldwide.

The step, without a worksheet

Picture the twelve branches as a ring. The solar-term month points at one branch and says: this branch, this month, is Establish. The next branch on the ring is Remove, then Full, Balance, Stable, Initiate, Destruction, Danger, Success, Receive, Open, and Close, and then the ring meets Establish again. You do not need the Chinese characters to see the idea. You do need to resist inventing a personal offset. The ring is not rotated by your birth year. Birth, if you add it, is a clash penalty on a different line. It does not rebuild Jianchu.

A solar-term month is not a Gregorian month and not a lunar month. The term that starts the next branch is a 节, one of the twelve month-opening terms. In this engine the switch is the civil date of that term, the way the library records it, not the exact minute and not a local solar time in Texas or Dubai. The day before the term and the day of the term can therefore wear different month branches, and a branch that was Establish yesterday can wear another officer today. That jump surprises people who expect the officer to be a property of the animal alone. The animal is only half of the pair.

Activity lists and the yellow or black path are calculated beside this, not inside it. Path comes from a day spirit tied to the month branch and the day branch, then classed as yellow (黄道) or black (黑道). A day can be Establish and black path, or Open and yellow path. If you want the rank rather than the construction, Pick a Good Day prints the officer, the path, and the lists together. This page is only the construction of the officer.

Cold Dew in 2026, as a check

On 7 October 2026 the day pillar is 甲寅 and the month pillar is still 丁酉. The officer is Initiate (执). On 8 October the solar term Cold Dew (寒露) falls, the month pillar becomes 戊戌, and the day pillar is 乙卯, still Initiate, because the month ring has stepped as well as the day. On 2 October, still in the 酉 month, the day is 己酉 and the officer is Establish: day branch and month branch match. On 15 October, in the 戌 month, the day is 壬戌 and the officer is Establish again, for the new month. On 13 October the day is 庚申, the officer is Open, the spirit is Golden Coffer (金匮), and the path is yellow. That 13 October line is the locked travel example in the engine: travel listed as suitable, score 8 before any birth date. You do not have to rebuild it. If your hand count disagrees with the card, use the card. A margin error is easy. The tool’s job is to do the same count every time.

What the high-level count refuses

The count refuses three upgrades people ask for. It refuses to start the month at the lunar new moon, even if a printed tongshu on a relative’s table does. Schools differ; this product is explicit about the solar-term month. It refuses to slide the day pillar at 23:00 for the officer. The day branch used here is the branch of the civil date. It refuses to import a useful element from BaZi and add it to the officer. A chart question belongs on BaZi. An officer question belongs on the date. Mixing them produces a number nobody can audit.

Where the points touch the label

Once the name is known, the score uses only four of the twelve as adjustments. Success (成) and Open (开) add two. Full (满) adds one. Close (闭) and Destruction (破) subtract two. Establish, Remove, Balance, Stable, Initiate, Danger, and Receive are still printed. They contribute zero by themselves. Zero is information. It means the officer will not carry a day that the activity list dislikes, and it means a zero officer is not a shame mark you must avoid. Suitable activities for the occasion you named add four each. Unsuitable ones subtract five. Yellow path adds two. Black path subtracts two. Those weights are why a famous officer can lose to a plain one. The construction essay stops before pretending the officer is the whole day. How to read the finished card is Pick a Good Day.

Custom occasions, which have no traditional activity name, keep path and officer only. Their officer math is the same build. They simply have fewer other points. A purpose you invented does not get a private Jianchu.

A limit you should say out loud

High level means you can explain the ring and the term. It does not mean you should pick a wedding by reconstructing October on a napkin while a venue holds a date for twenty minutes. Run the window. Read the officer beside the list. If the only date the venue holds is Destruction, you now know the label subtracts two and the venue is the constraint. The disclaimer is the sentence for that moment: guidance, then the real calendar, with no outcome promised. Clinicians, counsel, and filing deadlines are not officers.

The past-life quiz does not build Jianchu. It is entertainment fiction on another shelf. An imagined era has no month branch. Do not type a story result into a date tool and expect an officer to honor it.

What this is not

  • A full almanac textbook, a minute-level term clock, or a lunar-new-moon school presented as ours.
  • A personal cycle rotated by your birth animal. Birth clash is a separate penalty.
  • The whole score. Path and activity lines are other layers.
  • A BaZi pillar. The month branch here is an almanac month, not your natal month used as destiny.
  • A reason to hand-correct the card when your count disagrees.
  • A medical, legal, or financial timetable. The officer names a traditional day type.

Use the card you were shown

Opening the date tool does not charge. You can look up a single preview day and see the officer the ring produced. You do not have to finish the ring by hand before you are allowed to read it.
