The Twelve Day Officers in an Almanac Explained

The twelve day officers are a rotating label on each civil date: Establish, Remove, Full, Balance, Stable, Initiate, Destruction, Danger, Success, Receive, Open, and Close. An almanac card prints one of them beside the path and the activity lists. Explaining them to a colleague means saying which names move our score, which names are only printed, and why one word is a bad summary. The officers are professional guidance. They are not a personality test and not the whole rank.

Key facts

  • The cycle order is Establish (建), Remove (除), Full (满), Balance (平), Stable (定), Initiate (执), Destruction (破), Danger (危), Success (成), Receive (收), Open (开), Close (闭).
  • Initiate is the officer some English notes call Hold. Destruction is the officer some notes call Break. The card and the blog may use different glosses for the same character.
  • Score: Success or Open, plus two; Full, plus one; Close or Destruction, minus two. The other seven officers add zero and are still worth reading.
  • The officer comes from the gap between the day branch and the solar-term month branch. It is not your birth year, and it changes when the month-opening term arrives.
  • Path is a separate plus-two or minus-two. A colleague who wants “the lucky word” is asking the officer to swallow the path and the list. It will not.
  • One suitable activity line is plus four. One unsuitable line is minus five. Those lines usually matter more than the officer for the occasion you named.

How to read the line in ten minutes

Start with the occasion, not the officer. Travel, a wedding, a memorial, a meeting, an opening or a move: each maps to named activities. Custom maps to nothing in the list and keeps path and officer only. Then read the officer as a class, not a command. Then read the path as a road, not a moral. Then read the avoid line, because a cheerful officer can sit on a specific warning. If you have ten minutes with a skeptical colleague, that order is the whole lesson. The reverse order, officer first, produces superstition even among people who think they are being brief.

The zero officers are where colleagues get impatient. Balance, Stable, Remove, Establish, Initiate, Danger, and Receive sound like they should have been edited out if they do not score. They are printed because “Danger” and “Establish” change what a reader feels, and hiding them would make the card look like it only has four days. Feeling is not a weight. We show the name and withhold the fake penalty. Danger, especially, is a translation that panics people while adding nothing. Say that out loud. It saves a cancellation.

The scored officers are where colleagues get devout. Success and Open sound like permission. Close and Destruction sound like a ban. Full sounds like a receipt. Give each one its points and then show a list that contradicts the mood. Contradiction is the teaching. A method you cannot audit is a mood. The published weights are the audit.

Three dates and a colleague who wants one word

In a Frankfurt office, three candidate dates for an optional internal demo survive the team calendar: 11, 12, and 13 October 2026. The colleague asks which word is the lucky one. The 11th is Success, black path, Heavenly Punishment, with travel and opening among the suitable lines. The 12th is Receive, black path, Vermilion Bird, and opening a market is unsuitable. The 13th is Open, yellow path, Golden Coffer, with travel and opening suitable. For an opening-style demo, the 13th carries suitable points, yellow path, and Open. The 11th carries suitable points and Success, while black path cancels the officer’s lift. The 12th carries an unsuitable opening line and a zero officer. The one word he wants is Open. The honest sentence is longer: the 13th is the best traditional fit of the three for an opening, the demo still has to work, and if the only engineer who can run it is away on the 13th, you take the 11th and you do not apologize to Golden Coffer. You can show him that sentence on a preview from Pick a Good Day instead of reconstructing it in the meeting. The reconstruction here is so you recognize the card when you see it.

Glosses that split

If he searches later, he will find Hold for 执 and Break for 破 and think the tool is missing two officers. It is not. Initiate is Hold. Destruction is Break. Close has no alias on our card. Establish is sometimes searched as Jian. Teach the aliases once. Then return to the weights, which do not care what English you prefer. The ring that produces the names, including the jump at a solar term, is how Jianchu days are calculated. Ten minutes does not require the ring. Thirty minutes might, if he is sure tiger days are always the same officer. They are not.

What you should refuse to explain

Refuse to explain a colleague’s character from the officer on their birthday. Refuse to explain a child’s birth. Refuse to move a payroll file, a court date, or a clinic because Close sounds shut. Refuse to call black path a moral failing so the officer can stay the hero of the story. The path’s dignity is its own subject. Officers and roads together are still smaller than a constraint. The disclaimer is the refusal in policy language. This page is the refusal in card language.

If the colleague actually wanted a birth chart, you have been explaining the wrong tool for ten minutes. Day officers are not pillars. Send them to what BaZi is and stop blending the vocabularies in one slide. Blended slides are how “Open” becomes a destiny.

A custom occasion is the other trap. If the demo maps to nothing traditional, say so. The rank will use path and officer only, and a long suitable list on the card will be commentary rather than points. Pretending every English verb has a hidden activity code is how trust dies. Name the limit. Then pick the date the engineer can attend.

What this is not

  • A single lucky word that replaces path, lists, and the roster.
  • Twelve personality types, or twelve kinds of children.
  • A ban list. Only Close and Destruction subtract, and even they do not outrank a necessary appointment.
  • The lunar mansion, the path, or a BaZi day pillar. Those are other lines.
  • A full textbook of every classical association. Themes live on the officer pages. This page is how to read the line.
  • Medical, legal, or financial instruction hiding in a day name.

Give the colleague the longer sentence

Opening the tool does not charge. The lucky word is a habit of speech. The card is a small sum of officer, path, and list. Say the sum. Then ask who can actually attend.
