English Glossary of BaZi and Almanac Terms We Use

This glossary defines only the words our BaZi charts and Pick a Good Day cards actually rely on: day master, ten gods, luck cycle, solar term, useful element, void, yellow path, black path, day officer, and suitable or unsuitable. Other classical names are left undefined on purpose. The tools are professional guidance, not a stage act, and they do not promise an outcome. Leave an unknown clock blank so the hour pillar stays empty, and do not expect ten-year steps unless sex at birth is on the form as well.

Key facts

Day master is the day stem. Ten gods are the ten relationships of other stems to that stem.
A luck cycle is a ten-year climate. It needs hour and sex at birth. Sex at birth is only the direction switch.
Solar terms set BaZi year and month boundaries. Lunar festivals are a different calendar.
The useful element is a priority derived from the chart, not a product to buy.
Void is an empty-branch gap on the full chart, not a judgment that a life is empty.
Yellow path, black path, day officer, and suitable or unsuitable lists are almanac inputs to a date rank.

Day master

The day master (日主) is the heavenly stem of the day you were born, once solar-term rules are applied. Other stems are compared with it. It is not a personality brand, a medical type, or a rank of human worth. A strong or weak note is only a seasonal metaphor, with the caution written on that strength page. Leave an unknown clock blank. The day pillar can still be cast. Do not invent a time to decorate this stem.

Ten gods

The ten gods (十神) name how another stem sits against the day master: same element, or a generating or controlling tie, and whether polarity matches.

How the ten names group

Same element, same polarity: Companion (比肩). Same element, opposite polarity: Rob Wealth (劫财). What the day master produces, matching polarity then opposite: Eating God (食神), then Hurting Officer (伤官). What the day master controls: Indirect Wealth (偏财) and Direct Wealth (正财). What controls the day master: Seven Killings (七杀) and Direct Officer (正官). What produces the day master: Indirect Resource (偏印) and Direct Resource (正印).

The glosses are technical. Rob Wealth is not a theft charge. Seven Killings is not a bodily threat. Officer is not an order, and the wealth pair is not a payout. The light chart shows gods for stems that exist. The day stem is the reference, not a god aimed at itself. These pages drop the old script that handed one god to men and another to women as fate. Luck cycle

A luck cycle (大运) is a ten-year pillar walked forward or backward from the month pillar. Which way it walks is a switch: the year stem’s yin or yang quality, together with sex at birth. Where the walk starts depends on how far birth falls from the neighboring solar term. Decades are printed only if a real hour was supplied along with that sex-at-birth switch. No clock means an empty hour pillar and no invented decades.

A cycle is climate. A kinder step, in our wording, brings the useful element and still does not guarantee the decade. Sex at birth is not gender identity and does not pick a partner. A year inside the decade is passing weather, not a reason to refuse a doctor or a contract.

Solar term

A solar term (节气) is one slice of the twenty-four that divide the tropical year. The BaZi year turns at Start of Spring, not at Lunar New Year, and the month turns at the principal terms, not on the first of a Western month. Two birthdays a few days apart can therefore sit in different chart months. A term on a civil date is not automatically the preferred almanac day. The split is festival dates versus terms.

Useful element

The useful element (喜用) is the priority the reading gives the chart after it looks at day-master strength and seasonal adjustment. A chart that reads as strong is usually steered toward output, wealth, and officer. A chart that reads as weak is usually steered toward resource and companions. The page states the priority in words. It is a judgment of the chart, not a charm, a color to buy, or a diet.

Element words are not a diagnosis. A health-tendency line is classical association only. It does not name a disease. The useful element also does not excuse exhaustion or shame a thin account. See capacity, kept non-clinical and money talk without shame.

Void

Void (空亡) is a pair of earthly branches the day pillar’s ten-day cycle does not occupy. The full chart can mark them. Read the mark as a gap or a delay, not a curse, an empty life, or a biography of adoption or travel. Do not paste it onto someone who did not ask. The longer caution is empty branches. The light chart can skip void. Do not hunt it on a guessed hour.

Yellow path and black path

Yellow path (黄道) and black path (黑道) are the almanac’s two-way label for a civil date. Yellow path adds two points on Pick a Good Day. Black path subtracts two. The weight is a published rule, not a halo or a threat. A school, a court, a hospital, or a ticket still outranks the path. Doubters may use the points as a tie-breaker. That invitation includes no belief test, and the window’s order stays stable.

Day officer

The day officer (建除) is one of twelve rotating labels on the civil date. Our English glosses are Establish, Remove, Full, Balance, Stable, Initiate, Destruction, Danger, Success, Receive, Open, and Close. In the rank, Success and Open add two points, Full adds one, and Close and Destruction subtract two. The other officers are named on the card and do not add those particular weights.

Names that sound like threats

Danger and Destruction are old labels in the rotation. They do not forecast harm and they are not medical advice. A tender date such as Qingming can carry any officer. The label does not grade grief. Immediate danger is a local emergency call. This glossary is not a dispatch desk.

Suitable and unsuitable

Suitable (宜) and unsuitable (忌) are the activity lists on an almanac day. Our scorer looks at the activities tied to the occasion you chose. A match on the suitable list adds four points. A match on the unsuitable list subtracts five. Travel, weddings, memorial rites, meetings, and openings each have their own activity names. A custom occasion ignores those lists and uses path and day officer only.

The lists are not commands. An unsuitable mark does not cancel a deadline you cannot move, and a suitable mark does not promise the meeting. Medical activity names stay off the card. See a doctor when you need one. Family logistics stay with adults, and a child’s data stays out, as on the parent note.
