Day Master, Ten Gods, and Luck Cycles — Plain English

The day master is the heavenly stem of the day pillar, and every other stem in the chart is named by how it treats that one stem. Those names are the ten gods. Luck cycles are a second clock: ten-year steps that move across the life, counted on the full chart only when the hour and sex at birth are both known. Together they are the working vocabulary of a BaZi reading offered as guidance. They describe relationships inside a calendar. They do not assign a salary, a spouse, or a diagnosis.

Key facts

  • The day master is the day stem. It stays the reference even when the hour pillar is blank.
  • Ten gods come in five pairs: companion, output, wealth, officer, and resource, each split by yin and yang polarity.
  • The English glosses used here are Companion, Rob Wealth, Eating God, Hurting Officer, Indirect Wealth, Direct Wealth, Seven Killings, Direct Officer, Indirect Resource, and Direct Resource.
  • A useful-element sketch follows from whether the day master is relatively strong or thin in the month’s season.
  • Eight 10-year luck steps appear on the full chart ($19.99) only when sex at birth and the hour are both known. Sex at birth sets direction, not a marriage script.
  • Light BaZi is $12.99 and includes the day master, the ten gods, element balance, the useful-element sketch, and a short reading.

The day master

Find the day pillar, the third pair if all four are present. The upper character is a stem: jia, yi, bing, ding, wu, ji, geng, xin, ren, or gui. That stem has an element and a polarity. Jia wood and yi wood are both wood; jia is yang and yi is yin. The same split runs through fire, earth, metal, and water. The day master is that stem, not the day branch under it, and not the year animal people already know from popular zodiac lists.

Strength is judged against the month, because the month is the season. Wood is in season in the yin and mao months, fire in si and wu, metal in shen and you, water in hai and zi, and earth in the four storage months chen, xu, chou, and wei. A day master standing in its own season is read as abundant. A day master standing in the season that controls it is read as pressed. The house score uses that seasonal rank, then adds visible stems of the same element and resource, and the hidden roots of the day master, with a penalty if the month branch is clashed. The bands run from strong to weak. The band is a description of the chart’s climate. It is not a grade of the person.

The useful element is the priority that follows the band. A strong day master is read as ready for output, wealth, and officer, the stars that spend or check its qi. A weak day master is read as needing resource and companion, the stars that feed it or stand beside it. Seasonal adjustment, in the manner of the classical climate tables, can name a further element for that stem in that month. The sketch says what the method would rather see. It does not say the element will arrive, and it does not tell you to rearrange a life around a color.

The ten gods, pair by pair

Each other stem is compared with the day master twice: by element relationship, and by whether the polarity matches.

Same element, same polarity: Companion (比肩). Same element, opposite polarity: Rob Wealth (劫财). These are the peer stars. They can read as colleagues, siblings in the classical house language, or competition for the same ground. Rob Wealth is a technical name. It is not an accusation that someone will steal.

The element the day master produces, same polarity: Eating God (食神). Opposite polarity: Hurting Officer (伤官). These are output. They are the classical language of expression, craft, appetite, and the kind of intelligence that leaves the self and becomes work. Hurting Officer is blunt output. It is not a prediction of injury.

The element the day master controls, same polarity: Indirect Wealth (偏财). Opposite polarity: Direct Wealth (正财). Wealth stars are what the day master can take in hand. A stronger day master is read as more able to carry them. A thinner day master is read as carrying them more safely when resource or a companion is also present. No figure is attached.

The element that controls the day master, same polarity: Seven Killings (七杀). Opposite polarity: Direct Officer (正官). Officer stars are pressure, rank, rules, and the classical career-and-authority vocabulary. Seven Killings is the sharper pressure. Direct Officer is the more regular one. Neither is a job offer.

The element that produces the day master, same polarity: Indirect Resource (偏印). Opposite polarity: Direct Resource (正印). Resource is support, study, shelter, and the documents or people that feed the day master. Indirect Resource is the less orthodox feed. It is not a medical label.

Where the gods sit

On the printed chart the year stem, month stem, and hour stem each receive a god. The day stem does not receive a god about itself. If the hour is blank, only the stems that exist are labeled. The full chart also looks at hidden stems inside the branches, so a branch can carry a god that the visible stem does not show. The light chart works from the visible stems and the balance. That is enough for the short reading.

What the short reading does with them

The light reading uses this vocabulary in five short passages: temperament, work, wealth, relationship, and health tendency. Temperament follows the day master and the gods that crowd it. Work follows officer, output, and the month climate. Wealth follows the wealth stars and the strength band. Relationship follows the day branch and the gods that bear on it, without writing a marriage script from sex at birth. Health tendency names an elemental climate. It is metaphor. A water-heavy chart is not a kidney diagnosis. Anyone who needs medical care should get it from a clinician, on any day the calendar shows.

Luck cycles

The natal chart is the birth instant. Luck cycles are ten-year pillars that walk forward through the life, each step a stem and a branch read against the same day master. The count begins a certain number of years, months, and days after birth, measured toward a solar term. Direction depends on sex at birth and on the yin or yang of the year stem, which is the classical rule. On this site that is the only use of sex at birth. It does not rewrite the ten gods and it does not produce a separate “male chart” and “female chart” with different moral advice.

Eight steps are shown, covering a long adult span, each with a starting age and a starting year. Inside the first step, ten annual pillars are listed so the decade can be read year by year. A step that supports the useful element is described as a more workable climate. A step that presses the day master is described as a heavier climate. People do real work in both. The step is not permission, and it is not a ban.

If the hour is unknown, the start of the count has no hour to measure from, so the steps are not printed. If sex at birth is not given, the direction is unknown, so the steps are not printed. The full chart will say so rather than borrow a default gender or a default hour. Light BaZi does not include the eight steps at all. It is the natal reading.

Annual and monthly layers exist in the wider tradition. The full chart’s annual strip is the ten years of the first luck step, not a fear calendar for every month of your life. A single difficult day does not define a ten-year step, and a ten-year step does not define a single afternoon.

How to practice the vocabulary

Name the day master first, element and polarity. Name the month branch and ask whether that season feeds, drains, or presses the day master. Then name the three or four visible gods in the order year, month, hour. Notice which pair repeats. A chart with two resource stems is a different room from a chart with two officer stems, even when the day master is the same wood.

Open the full-chart layers only after that picture is stable: hidden stems, a clash, a void pair, the structure name, a symbolic star. Luck steps come last, and only when they were counted. The years are weather over a day master you have already named.

Use the vocabulary as guidance beside ordinary judgment. An officer-heavy month can describe a season of rules. A wealth star on a strong day master can describe capacity. The contract and the investment stay outside the chart.

What this is not

  • Not a sun sign. The day master is a stem from the Chinese solar calendar, not a Western zodiac month.
  • Not a moral ranking. Rob Wealth, Hurting Officer, and Seven Killings are technical names.
  • Not a marriage script derived from sex at birth. That field only sets luck direction.
  • Not a luck-cycle forecast when the hour or sex at birth is missing.
  • Not medical, legal, or financial advice, and not a promised income.
  • Not entertainment. The past-life quiz is fiction. This vocabulary is metaphysics offered as guidance.
