How BaZi Luck Pillars Start: Direction and Timing Basics

BaZi luck pillars start from the month pillar and walk the sixty-step cycle either forward or backward, a switch set by the year stem’s yin or yang together with sex at birth. When they begin is a second calculation: the distance from the birth hour to the neighboring monthly solar term, converted into years, months, and days of age. The full chart runs that count only when the hour and sex at birth are both known, and the result is professional guidance about a start, not a fate.

Key facts

Forward, in the classical rule this engine uses: yang year stem with male sex at birth, or yin year stem with female sex at birth. Backward: yin year stem with male sex at birth, or yang year stem with female sex at birth.
The walk moves from the month pillar’s stem-branch to the next pair in the cycle, or the previous pair. The first printed decade is one step away from the month, not a copy of the month.
Timing uses the monthly solar terms (节), the twelve that open BaZi months, not all twenty-four terms and not the Gregorian New Year. Forward counts toward the next term. Backward counts from the previous term.
This chart’s default conversion follows the traditional three-day idea using hour-branch differences: about three days of distance become one year of starting age, with the remainder carried into months and days. A minutes-based school can print a different remainder.

Two switches, kept apart

People mix direction and timing into one fog called “when my luck starts.” Separate them. Direction chooses the next pillar’s name. Timing chooses the year that name becomes the climate. A right name with a wrong year, or a right year with the neighboring name, will both feel “almost” correct and will mis-locate a decade. The four pillars must be right before either switch is trustworthy, because a wrong month pillar is a wrong platform to walk from.

The polarity switch, without a social script

Yang stems are 甲, 丙, 戊, 庚, and 壬. Yin stems are 乙, 丁, 己, 辛, and 癸. The year stem is the one after Start of Spring, not the animal of a lunar new year card. Sex at birth is the second input, used here only as the classical direction switch. It is not a marriage role and not a career role. What BaZi is states that limit. The term switch

Forward: measure from the birth instant to the next monthly term. Backward: measure from the previous monthly term to the birth instant. A person born soon after a term, walking backward, has a short distance and an early start. A person born soon after a term, walking forward, has almost a full month of distance and a later start. The same birthday can therefore “start luck” at very different ages for two adults whose directions differ. That is the method, not a judgement of whose life began properly.

The 1991 check, read as arithmetic

Take the published Beijing case as arithmetic an adult can audit, not as a reading of anyone’s childhood. Birth 2 March 1991, 14:05 civil time, male, year stem 辛 yin metal, month pillar 庚寅. Yin male walks backward, so the first decade is 己丑 rather than 辛卯. The interval printed is 8 years, 7 months, 20 days, and the step is labeled from 1999. Someone staring at the file says, “Eight days before a term would have started me at age two, so this eight-year start means I was far from the term.” The three-day rule is the right sketch and the wrong precision. Hour branches change the remainder. Solar time, not the wall clock alone, is what this engine measures when a city is known. The sentence to keep is: “I will let the full chart print the interval. I will not divide a calendar guess by three and call it the start.” If your own birth is eight days from a term, expect a short interval only after you know you are counting toward the term your direction actually uses. Eight days forward is not eight days backward.

The light chart of that birth still exists without the decade. Luck is an extra layer, not a correction of the four pillars. The guidance disclaimer applies to both layers.

What is withheld when an input is missing

No hour: the hour pillar is blank, the day pillar is taken from local noon, and the steps are not counted. A guessed “afternoon” would move both the hour branch and the distance to the term. No sex at birth: the pillars can still be cast, and the direction switch stays open, so the decades stay off. No listed city: the clock is a fixed UTC+8 reading, not a fake Beijing longitude. If you later add a city, the solar correction can move the hour and sometimes the day, which can move the start. Re-cast. Do not average the two clocks.

The years before the first pillar

The interval is a real stretch with no ten-year guest of the kind the later steps have. Some schools discuss minor cycles for those years. This chart does not invent a decade to fill them. If your start is age nine, the early years are read from the natal chart alone. That is a feature. Early life is not improved by a borrowed pillar.

Do not schedule a civil act on the start arithmetic

A passport renewal, a tenancy, a surgery date: each has an office that does not read 节. Pick a Good Day can rank an optional errand. What this is not
