Earthly Branches in BaZi: Animals, Seasons, and Context
The twelve earthly branches are the lower characters of a BaZi pillar, the ones popular calendars nickname with animals. They also carry seasons, a main element, and hidden stems. In a reading they are context: the month branch is the climate, and any branch can clash, harm, or combine with another. The animal is a memory aid. It is not the whole branch, and it is not a personality you must live up to. The method is professional guidance.
Key facts
- The twelve, in order, are Zi rat, Chou ox, Yin tiger, Mao rabbit, Chen dragon, Si snake, Wu horse, Wei goat, Shen monkey, You rooster, Xu dog, and Hai pig.
- Zi and Hai are water season, Yin and Mao wood, Si and Wu fire, Shen and You metal. Chou, Chen, Wei, and Xu are treated as earth months in our seasonal table.
- The year branch used here changes at Start of Spring. A lunar-new-year animal announced at a festival can differ for births near that boundary.
- The month branch changes at the solar term, not on the first of a Western month.
- Hidden stems inside a branch are listed on the full chart. The visible animal does not display them.
- Clash, harm, and six-combination are relationships between branches, not morals of the animals.
Animals are the nickname, not the mechanism
Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai are the names to learn if you want to follow a classical text. Rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig are the English memory hooks. Either list is fine as a label. Trouble starts when the hook becomes a character sketch: pigs are generous, dragons are leaders, rabbits are gentle. The chart does not read that way. A rabbit branch on the month is a wood-season month with Yi wood as its main hidden stem. A rabbit branch on the day is a different room of the same chart. The animal word stayed. The job changed.
Season is the job that matters first for strength. Our table treats Yin and Mao as wood, Si and Wu as fire, Shen and You as metal, Zi and Hai as water, and the four storage branches Chou, Chen, Wei, and Xu as earth. That is why an earth day master can be “in season” in a month whose animal is an ox, a dragon, a goat, or a dog. The animal folklore does not say “earth.” The calendar table does.
What BaZi is puts the branch under the stem in each pillar. The four pillars say what year, month, day, and hour are asked to carry. A branch is never read alone as a complete chart. Four branches, or three if the hour is blank, are the set.
Hidden stems and the season you can actually use
Each branch stores one or more heavenly stems. Zi stores Gui water. Mao stores Yi wood. You stores Xin metal. Hai stores Ren water and Jia wood. The storage months and the mixed branches store three. The full chart prints that list, main qi first. The light chart can still discuss the branch’s main element without opening every stored stem. If you need the stored list, that is a reason to look at the full chart, not a reason to invent an hour so a fourth branch appears.
Combinations and clashes use the branches, not the stems on top. Zi clashes Wu. Yin combines with Hai. Mao harms Chen. Those are pair rules among the twelve. They are technical notes when they occur between the pillars you have. They are not a verdict that the rat and the horse “cannot be friends” in ordinary life. Two colleagues can share a project on a day whose branches clash. The note asks for care in a symbolic reading. It does not adjourn the project.
A family dinner and a 4 February birth
At a family dinner in Abu Dhabi, a relative says, “You were born in February, so you are the animal they announced at the festival.” The person was born on 4 February, close to Start of Spring, and the festival that year fell on a different civil date. On this site the year branch follows Start of Spring. The festival animal is a cultural celebration. It may match the chart year, and near the boundary it may not. The respectful move is to calculate the year pillar rather than argue at the table. The birth time, if unknown, stays unknown. The year and month can still be placed from the date and the solar terms.
They do not need to correct the relative’s party. They need a chart that uses the rule the tool actually uses. Cast it from the civil birth date at BaZi. If the question is only which public holiday to attend, that is a family calendar, not a branch. Pick a Good Day ranks civil dates inside a window. It does not rename the year animal.
Context, not costume
A horse month is early summer in this seasonal table, fire qi, with Ding fire as a main stored stem and earth beside it. That context can support a fire day master and press a metal one. It does not mean the person born that month must be restless, athletic, or fond of travel. Those are costume readings. Context means: when we score support, this month contributes the fire season’s weight, and when we look at interactions, the horse branch has specific partners and opponents among the twelve.
The day branch is often read as a partnership axis in classical language. That is still context. It does not predict a marriage, a divorce, or the temperament of a person who is not in the room. Adults read their own charts. A child’s animal year is not an invitation to cast a child’s pillars on this site.
What to memorize, and what to leave on the chart
Memorize the twelve names and the season groups if you want to read without checking a table every time. Leave the hidden-stem lists and the interaction pairs on the chart, where they are calculated. Hand memory is how Zi-Wu gets remembered as a personality clash instead of a branch pair. The disclaimer is the boundary around all of it: guidance, not a fate, not a medical season, not a financial one. BaZi Four Pillars says which layers are on the light chart and which wait for the full chart. Shelf prices are $12.99 and $19.99. They pay for the reading. They do not pay for a preferred animal.
What this is not
This is not a horoscope of twelve personalities, a lunar-new-year calculator, or a compatibility test between animals. It is not entertainment. The earthly branches are seasonal and relational context under the stems, offered as professional guidance. The animal is how many people remember the branch. The season and the stored stems are how the chart uses it.
Look up the branch from the date
Opening the chart does not charge you. Use the birth date you have, let Start of Spring and the solar terms place the year and month branches, and leave a festival animal as a festival. Help covers a blank hour and the difference between a preview and a paid list. The full chart is where hidden stems are printed once you want that layer.
