Time Zones, Longitude, and True Solar Time in Online BaZi

An online BaZi chart is only as good as the clock it assumes. The time you type is civil time in the place’s time zone, including daylight saving if that place observed it on that date. When the city has a known longitude, the four pillars are then cast on apparent solar time: the sun’s time at that meridian, not the time on a national wall clock.

Key facts

  • Civil time comes from the IANA zone of the place you choose, so historical daylight saving is included. China from 1986 through 1991 uses Asia/Shanghai.
  • With longitude, pillars use apparent solar time: UTC plus longitude times four minutes, plus the equation of time.
  • With no listed city, the instant is handled as a fixed UTC+8 clock after removing a China daylight-saving hour if one applied. Longitude is not applied.
  • 23:00–23:59 on the casting clock is late zi. The hour branch is the rat and the day pillar advances. 00:00–00:59 is early zi. The day is already the new day.
  • A one-hour error is often an hour-branch error. It is not a small cosmetic change.
  • The same typed birth returns the same pillars. Consistency is not the same thing as a correct memory.

Why national clocks are not solar clocks

Time zones are political. Solar time is geographical. That surprises people who were told “Chinese time is one time.” For the year and month we do not leave you on a Beijing wall clock after the solar correction. All four pillars follow the corrected instant.

Born in Brooklyn, remembered in Beijing digits

A family moved before the child could talk. The grandmother recalls “eight in the morning China time” and the American birth certificate says 19:00 the previous evening in New York. Do not enter Beijing unless the birth was in Beijing. A New York morning and a Beijing morning are different hours in the pillars, often different days.

Daylight saving is not a footnote

Places changed their clocks. A summer birth in 1988 in China fell inside a national daylight-saving period. Do not “correct” it back to standard time before typing. Double correction is a common way to miss the branch by exactly one.

Longitude, and when we refuse to pretend

Apparent solar time needs a longitude. A listed city supplies one. Type the city. If your city is missing from the list, pick the honest limit and read the hour as less certain rather than borrowing a coastal capital that looks close on a map.

How large the solar shift is

Four minutes per degree of longitude is the rule of thumb, then a smaller equation-of-time wobble through the year. A city well east or west of its zone’s meridian can move the casting clock by many minutes. Precision theater about seconds is wasted. Precision about which side of 23:00 you were on is not.

Early February and the term minute

Start of Spring and the other solar terms fall on a minute, not on a slogan. A birth on the term’s civil date can sit in the old month or the new month depending on that minute and on the solar correction. The solar-term essay covers the calendar meaning. Here the point is narrower: a timezone error on a term day is a month-pillar error, which changes the structure of the whole chart. If your birthday is within a day of a term, confirm the city before you memorize the structure name.

What you can check without becoming an astronomer

You do not need to compute the equation of time. You need a birth place, a civil time, and a willingness to leave the hour blank when the time is a guess. After the chart is cast, look at the hour pillar and ask a plain question: does a one-branch neighbor tell a totally different story you were hoping for? If you only trust the chart when the hour flatters you, you are not checking the clock. You are negotiating with it.

Two relatives, two clocks

Parents disagree. One says 6:40 a.m., the other says the baby was there before the shift change at 7. Guidance can survive a labeled uncertainty. It cannot survive a false precision you repeat as fact.

Late zi is the hour people skip

Someone born at 23:20 wants the day to stay on the date printed on the form. On this engine the day pillar advances. If the hospital form says 12:10 a.m., type 00:10, not 12:10, unless you mean noon. Ambiguous “12” is a data error, not a metaphysical one.

Limits of a careful clock

Solar time does not prove the minute. It only stops us from adding a second, avoidable error on top of your input. Pillars are still a guidance language. A correct hour branch will not diagnose a life or schedule a marriage. A corrected month pillar will not choose a career. If the stakes of the chart feel medical or legal, you are in the wrong tool. Clocks are for casting. Clinicians and lawyers are for those other stakes.

Good Day uses a lighter birth note

Pick a Good Day can take a birth date to penalize clashes. That date uses the year branch after Start of Spring and the day pillar. It does not rebuild an hourly solar-time chart for every candidate day, and it does not need your birth minute. Do not import this essay’s clock anxiety into date picking. Do not import a Good Day rank back into the hour pillar. The tools share a tradition and not a single calculation.

When the city is a border

Births in transit, on ships, or in towns that changed zones are messy. If you cannot name a zone honestly, use the unknown-hour path rather than a romantic capital. A blank hour with a true date is cleaner guidance than four pillars from a borrowed skyline. State the doubt in your own notes. Future you will not remember which airport you guessed.

What this is not

  • A guarantee that the minute you remember is the minute the pillars need.
  • Permission to type a convenient city because the list is long.
  • A Beijing clock for every birth, regardless of country.
  • A way to ignore late zi because the birth certificate prints the previous evening.
  • Medical, legal, or immigration evidence about where someone was born.
  • An hourly BaZi of each day inside a Good Day window.
