Six Harmonies in BaZi: Cooperation as a Symbolic Lens

The six harmonies in BaZi are six fixed pairs of earthly branches, read as a cooperative link when both branches show up in one chart. Cooperation here is a symbolic lens. It suggests the two branches are tied in the method’s vocabulary. It does not suggest that the people, projects, or families a reader associates with those pillars will get along. The lens is professional guidance. It is not a peace treaty.

Key facts

  • Memorize six bonds: rat with ox, tiger with pig, rabbit with dog, dragon with rooster, snake with monkey, and horse with goat. The branch names are Zi–Chou, Yin–Hai, Mao–Xu, Chen–You, Si–Shen, and Wu–Wei.
  • Both branches must be present. A single Yin is not “waiting for its harmony.” It is a branch.
  • Our interaction note says which pillars combine. It does not score the harmony as lucky points.
  • The lens sits beside clash and harm. A chart can show a harmony between two pillars and a clash between two others.
  • Schools disagree about whether a pair transforms into a new element. This page does not assume the transformation.
  • The lens is about branches in a chart an adult is reading for themselves. It is not a compatibility product for unwilling people.

Cooperation, narrowly defined

Classical language calls these pairs he, a joining. English “harmony” is fair if it stays narrow. The branches are partners in a list. When month Yin meets hour Hai, the month branch and the hour branch are joined in that list. A reader may then ask how the month’s climate and the hour’s room interact. That is a chart question. It becomes a life claim only if someone adds “therefore the co-founders will not fight.” The chart did not meet the co-founders. The lens joined two characters.

Each pair has a traditional element that some teachers say the combination produces: earth for Zi-Chou, wood for Yin-Hai, fire for Mao-Xu, metal for Chen-You, water for Si-Shen, and fire or earth for Wu-Wei depending on the school. The disagreement on the last pair is a useful warning. If a basic label is already disputed, a bold transformation is not something to announce as fact. See the branches first. Mention a produced element only as a school’s further claim, with the uncertainty attached.

What BaZi is will not list these pairs. It tells you the chart exists. The four pillars tell you the rooms the pairs can connect. You need both before “month combines with day” means anything. A harmony inside one pillar is not how these six work. They are relationships between branches, so you need two pillars at least.

What the lens is good for

It is good for slowing down a clash-only reading. Beginners memorize the six clashes and then see every chart as friction. The six harmonies are the reminder that the same twelve branches have partners as well as opponents. A chart with Chen and You linked is allowed to be described as joined at those two rooms, even if another pair on the chart clashes. The reading gets more precise, not sweeter. Joined is not the same as easy. Some classical notes treat a combination as binding the qi so it does not do the job you expected from the branch alone. Precision includes that possibility. Sweetness does not.

It is also good for refusing animal matchmaking. Horse and goat are a six-harmony pair. That does not mean a person born in a horse year should marry a person born in a goat year. Year branches are one room, the year turns at Start of Spring on this site, and marriage is not a branch pair. The disclaimer rejects outcome promises. A harmonious marriage is an outcome promise if you let the pair make it.

A shareholder signing slot on 30 September

A project lead in Austin sees Yin on the year and Hai on the month and tells the other founder, “The six harmony means we will not argue. We can sign on 30 September without counsel reading the shareholder agreement.” The signing slot is real. The harmony is a lens on two branches of one natal chart, or of whoever’s chart they cast. It is not a review of the agreement. Counsel reads the agreement. The founders may still argue, as founders do, on a chart that contains Yin and Hai. They should keep the 30 September slot if the documents are ready and the lawyers are satisfied, and they should move it if the documents are not. The branches do not vote. The chart, for the person who wants the lens without the slogan, is at BaZi.

Using the other founder’s birth data to prove cooperation is a second problem. A chart is personal. Reading someone who did not ask, in order to win a signature, is not what this lens is for.

When both a harmony and a clash are printed

Suppose day and hour combine and year and month clash. The interaction line can carry both notes, because they refer to different pairs of pillars. Do not cancel them into a single mood. Ask which rooms are joined and which are in friction. Then ask what decision you actually have. If the decision is a date among several the lawyer offered, Pick a Good Day is the date tool, and a natal harmony does not add two points to a civil day. The full chart prints the interaction sentence with the other full-chart layers. BaZi Four Pillars is the contents page. Listed prices are $12.99 for the light chart and $19.99 for the full chart. The harmony note is not a paid blessing. It is a sentence about branches.

Adults only. Do not harmony-match children, classmates, or a partner who has not agreed to be discussed this way.

A sentence that keeps the lens symbolic

“Yin and Hai both appear, so the year and month branches are a six-harmony pair. That is a cooperative link in the chart’s vocabulary. It is not a forecast that the people at the table will agree.” If you cannot say the second sentence, do not say the first in public. The lens is for the reader’s own study.

What this is not

This is not couples counseling, a substitute for reading a contract, or a promise of peace. It is not entertainment. The six harmonies are a symbolic lens on six branch pairs inside professional BaZi guidance. Cooperation names the link. It does not bind the people you work with.

Keep the signing on the calendar it already has

Opening the chart does not charge you. Use the six pairs to describe branches, then let counsel and the 30 September slot do the work they were asked to do. Help is where a blank hour, and the missing branch that goes with it, is explained without inventing a partner.
