Earthly Branch Combinations in BaZi: A Practical Overview
Earthly branch combinations in BaZi are recognized pairings among the twelve branches, read as symbolic links when both branches appear in the pillars you have. The practical overview is small. Six-combinations are the pairs our chart actually notes between year, month, day, and hour. Three-harmony groups and half combinations are classical patterns that need their own caution, because a partial set is easy to overclaim. A combination is professional guidance about relationship between branches. It is not a marriage certificate, a business merger, or an automatic change of element.
Key facts
- There are six partner pairs, sometimes called the six harmonies. Rat with ox is one. The other five are a closed list, not a mood and not a love match.
- When two of those partners both appear among the natal pillars, the chart notes that those pillars combine.
- Clash and harm are different notes. A pair is not called a combination just because it is famous.
- Three-harmony groups need three branches of a set, or a careful reading of a pair. Two branches are not the whole frame.
- Transformation into another element is a further claim some schools make about a combination. It depends on conditions. It is not assumed on sight.
- An unknown hour means one less branch. Do not invent the missing partner so a combination appears.
The pairs the calendar actually names
Winter’s Zi is partnered with Chou. Yin is partnered with Hai. Mao is partnered with Xu. Chen is partnered with You. Si is partnered with Shen. High summer’s Wu is partnered with Wei. Those six are the liu he. Learn them as partners, not as love stories. Zi is not partnered with Wu. Zi clashes Wu. Swapping the partner list and the clash list is the usual beginner mistake, and it names the wrong relation.
On our full-chart interaction line, any two pillars whose branches are one of those pairs are reported as combining. Year and month can combine. Month and day can combine. Day and hour can combine. Year and hour can combine if both exist. The note says which pillars. It does not say the people those pillars “represent” will cooperate. Classical teaching sometimes attaches year to family, day branch to partnership, hour to later life. Those are rooms. A combination between rooms is a symbolic link between those parts of the chart. It is not a report on a relative who has their own life and did not ask to be read.
What BaZi is keeps the chart as eight characters, not as a social graph. The four pillars name the rooms so a combination has somewhere to sit. If animals are the only names you remember, translate one pair at a time and then return to the branch. Horse with goat is a hook for Wu with Wei. Tiger with pig is a hook for Yin with Hai. The hook is not permission to tell two people born under those signs that they are “combined.”
What to do with the note once you see it
Read it after the day master and the month, not before. A combination does not erase the season or the ten gods. It qualifies the branches. Some readers treat a combination as soft, a clash as harsh, and then stop. Soft is not the same as favorable, and harsh is not the same as doomed. A six-combination can bind qi in a way that makes a branch less available for something else you hoped to emphasize. The practical question is: which two rooms are linked, and what did I think those branches were doing before I noticed the link?
If the chart says no clash, harm, or six-combination appears, that is also information. Do not hunt a three-harmony in the margins to avoid an empty feeling. Absence of a pair is an ordinary chart. Most births are ordinary charts.
A registry window that closes Friday at 15:00
A reader sees Zi and Chou on the year and the day and calls it a marriage certificate. They have a civil partnership filing window that closes Friday at 15:00 at the registry, and they have not brought the documents the clerk listed. The combination did not file the form. Zi-Chou is a six-combination between two branches of their chart. The registry is a civil office with a clock. If the papers are ready, they go before 15:00 because they decided to file, not because ox met rat. If the papers are not ready, the combination does not extend the window. Cast the chart, if they want the note worded plainly, at BaZi. The clerk will ask for identification, not for a pillar.
The disclaimer is the right link when someone wants the chart to stand in for a legal status. It cannot. Pick a Good Day can describe two open appointment days if the registry offered two. One Friday deadline is not a combination problem.
Patterns that are not this note
Three branches of a harmony group, such as Shen, Zi, and Chen together, are a different classical pattern from a six-combination. Half of that group is less than the pattern. Punishments, harms, and breaks are not combinations, even when a book prints them on the same page. Our interaction line names clash, harm, and six-combination among the branches present. It does not silently transform Zi-Chou into earth and then hide the original branches. Transformation is a conditional reading. Treat it as uncertain unless the conditions are stated. The full chart is where the interaction sentence is part of the longer cast. BaZi Four Pillars lists combinations among the full-chart layers. The light chart is $12.99. The full chart is $19.99. Paying for the layer does not turn a pair into a legal bond.
Adults only. A combination is not a matchmaking tool aimed at a minor, and it is not a way to read a partner who did not consent to a chart.
A practical order
Name the branches you actually have. Check the six pairs. If one hits, name the two pillars and stop before the wedding story. If you are curious about a three-branch frame, count to three. If you are tempted to say the element changed, list the conditions and admit the doubt. Then return to the day master, which the combination did not replace.
What this is not
This is not matchmaking, a registry filing, or an automatic elemental transformation. It is not entertainment. Branch combinations are symbolic links in a professional BaZi reading, strongest as a claim when the partner branches are actually on the chart. The Friday window closes at 15:00 regardless.
Note the pair, then keep your appointment
Opening the chart does not charge you. Use the six pairs as a checklist against the branches you have, and let civil offices keep their own clocks. Help covers the blank hour that removes a branch you might have hoped was the partner.
