The Twelve Jianchu Day Values Explained in Plain English
The twelve Jianchu values are day officers. Each civil date carries one: Establish, Remove, Full, Balance, Stable, Initiate, Destruction, Danger, Success, Receive, Open, or Close. They are a traditional description of what kind of day it is for starting, finishing, or undoing things.
Key facts
- The cycle is twelve names long and repeats. It is not your natal day pillar and not your year animal.
- Success (成) and Open (开) add two points. Full (满) adds one. Close (闭) and Destruction (破) subtract two. The other officers are named and do not, by themselves, add those adjustments.
- Suitable activity lines add four points each. Unsuitable lines subtract five. Those lines usually move a day more than the officer does.
- Yellow path adds two and black path subtracts two, a separate mark from the officer.
- A birth-date clash penalty, when you supply a birth date, is also separate: six for the year branch after Start of Spring, four for the day pillar.
- Officers do not give medical, legal, or financial instructions. They do not delay care.
What the twelve are for
Classical almanacs attach each officer to a family of acts. Establish is associated with beginnings that set something upright. Open is for opening, travel, and beginnings that need a door. Close is for shutting, storing, and endings, and it is a poor symbolic fit for a grand opening.
A shop owner who sees Establish and hears a command
A reader planning a small opening sees Establish on a Thursday and treats it as an order to incorporate that morning. Establish is a temperament of the date, not a filing system. The activity list is more specific. Use the specific signal when you have it, and use Establish as color when the lists are quiet.
Destruction is not a cursed personality
Destruction sounds like a threat. In the cycle it marks a day traditionally used with caution for fine or auspicious starts, and sometimes preferred for demolition or clearing. Do not let a relative translate 破 into a character judgement at a birthday dinner. Translate it, if you must, as “this date was a breaking-style day in the almanac, which says nothing about the child.”
How the points sit beside the rest of the score
The officer adjustment is small because a single label cannot see your occasion. A Close day that is explicitly suitable for a burial rite is a different problem from a Close day you hoped to use for a product launch. We do not pretend the other eight are identical to each other in classical commentary. We do refuse to invent a steep point ladder that would let the officer drown a clear suitable or unsuitable line.
A window with three realistic days
You can travel on Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday. Wednesday is Success and black path, with travel listed as suitable. If Saturday is the only day your child is out of school, you take Saturday and you do not apologize to the officer. Constraints outrank a nudge.
What we do not let the officer do
We do not let it hide a medical line or create one. Treatment, seeking a doctor, and acupuncture phrases are removed from the visible card and do not affect rank. You will not see a Success day presented as a good day for surgery. You should not infer one either. See a doctor on the doctor’s schedule. The officer essay is a calendar essay. The surgery boundary is the refusal that keeps it from becoming a clinic.
Names in English without a costume
The English glosses are Establish, Remove, Full, Balance, Stable, Initiate, Destruction, Danger, Success, Receive, Open, and Close. They are pointers into a Chinese technical cycle, not motivational posters. Small signals are still guidance. They are just not omens.
Stable, Balance, and the days people skip
Balance and Stable sound dull, so people skip them for Open even when Open falls outside the window. Dull days are when most of life is allowed to happen. Our downward nudges are specifically Close and Destruction. The rest are not a shame list.
Initiate and Remove in real kitchens
Initiate is a reasonable friend to a project that has a clear owner and a start gun. Remove is a reasonable friend to clearing a flat, ending a subscription, or taking down a structure you mean to take down. The reconciliation use of timing, if you read that essay later, makes the same point. Officers are not spine.
The cycle is not a BaZi pillar
BaZi uses stems and branches in four pillars. Jianchu uses a twelve-name cycle tied to the lunar month’s construction. You can study both, and you should not add a day master’s element to an officer and call the sum a fate.
A launch that blamed the officer
A founder who wants climate reads a chart. A founder who wants a Tuesday reads the officer. Blaming a quiet inbox on that officer mixes the clocks. The inbox was never one of the twelve names.
What the date tool actually personalizes
If you add a birth date, the rank only penalizes branch clashes. It does not import your useful god into the officer. Keep the chart for pattern and the officer for the day you can still move.
What this is not
- A moral ranking of people, or a personality type based on a birthday’s officer.
- A guarantee that Success succeeds or that Danger injures.
- The whole date score. Activity lines and path can outweigh it.
- A medical timetable, a legal filing system, or a price forecast.
- The same thing as the natal day pillar in BaZi.
- A reason to ignore a window that only contains Balance, Stable, or Full.
