Good Day Planning Note 28: A fundraising conversation that is not financial advice

A fundraising conversation that is already on a calendar is a meeting with another human who reserved the hour. Attend it. This note is not financial advice, not investment advice, and not a forecast of a round, a valuation, or a return. An auspicious label does not price equity and does not tell anyone to give or take money.

Key facts

  • A booked investor, donor, or grant conversation stays on the books. Do not postpone it for a luckier day officer.
  • Nothing on this page tells you to raise, invest, donate, or set a price. Those decisions are not metaphysics.
  • Materials, numbers, and risk factors should be ready before the call. A supportive date does not repair a sloppy model.
  • If counsel or a regulator has told you not to solicit, follow that instruction. A yellow path is not permission to solicit.
  • Time zones and the other party's board calendar are the real constraints on when you meet.
  • The tool does not read term sheets, cap tables, or campaign accounts.

Pick a Good Day is professional metaphysics guidance, not entertainment. It must not be quoted in a deck as evidence. If the meeting is booked, keep it. If you are still proposing times, practical availability comes first, and a date sketch is only a tie-break between slots the other side can actually do.

Show up for the hour they gave you

People who allocate money keep tight calendars. When a fund partner offers Thursday 15:00 and you accept, Thursday 15:00 is the constraint. Asking to slide to the following Tuesday because a personal ranking preferred Tuesday wastes a scarce hour and signals that you treat commitments lightly. If you have a true conflict, say so immediately and offer concrete alternatives. "Our counsel is in a closing that hour" is a reason. "Tuesday is Success and Thursday is not" is not a reason they should honor.

Prepare the conversation as a conversation. Know what you are asking, what you are not asking, and which figures you can defend. Send materials when you said you would. Test the video link. Those acts change the quality of the hour. The traditional name of the weekday does not. If you are the person being asked for money, you are equally free to keep your own calendar. You do not owe a founder a reschedule so their metaphysics feel comfortable.

Not a model, not a recommendation

Repeat the boundary in plain language. This page does not estimate returns, recommend a security, value a company, or tell a donor that a gift is wise. It does not say a day is "good for money" in the sense of profit. Suitable and unsuitable lines in an almanac are cultural labels for kinds of activity, not performance data. Quoting them to an investor as if they were diligence is a mistake. Do not do it. If you want financial advice, hire a qualified adviser under the rules of your jurisdiction. If you are raising from the public, follow securities law with a lawyer. The almanac is not that lawyer.

Grants and charitable asks have their own integrity rules: restricted funds, reporting, and honest program descriptions. A date preference does not change what you may claim about impact. Say what is true. Meet the foundation on the day their program officer scheduled.

Two open slots, and the sketch's small job

Before anyone has accepted, you might offer two times you can staff with the right cofounder in the room. Build those offers from calendars, not from a month-long lucky search that ignores the investor's published office hours. If both remaining slots are truly free on both sides, you may privately prefer one and send a single hold. The sketch, once: yellow path, day officer Success or Open, a meeting marked suitable rather than unsuitable. Keep any birthday out of the pitch. Privately, that field penalizes a year-branch clash and a day-pillar clash, then nothing more. It does not predict a term sheet. After they accept, the sketch is retired. You do not reopen it the night before and try to move the call.

If they cancel, cooperate and take the next slot they can do. Do not hold out for a traditionally prettier week if that week misses their investment committee date. Their committee clock is a practical constraint. Your officer preference is not. Missing the committee because you wanted a softer Tuesday can delay a decision by a month for no operational gain.

Scene: a partner holds Tuesday for a first meeting. The founder wants Friday. Tuesday stands, the founder attends, and nobody mentions an almanac. Scene: the partner says "send two times next week," and both Wednesday and Thursday work for the whole founding team. The founder may compare those two civil dates, offer one, and keep the other as a backup only if the partner asks for a backup. The comparison is private. It never enters the pitch.

What this is not

This note is not financial, investment, legal, or medical advice. It is not entertainment, and it is not a fundraising strategy. It does not tell you whether to raise money or give it. Qualified advisers and the other party's own process outrank any day ranking. Keep the meeting you booked.
